What is the GRE?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test used by universities worldwide for admission into graduate programs including MS, MBA and other postgraduate degrees. The exam measures a student’s verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing skills, which are essential for success in graduate level education.

The GRE is accepted by thousands of universities across the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia, making it one of the most widely recognized graduate admission tests.

In 2023, the GRE was redesigned to be shorter and more efficient, reducing the overall test duration while maintaining its ability to evaluate critical thinking and analytical ability.

GRE Exam Pattern (Updated)

The shorter GRE now takes approximately 1 hour 58 minutes to complete.

The test consists of three sections:

Analytical Writing
1 Task – Analyze an Issue

Verbal Reasoning
2 Sections – Reading comprehension, text completion and sentence equivalence

Quantitative Reasoning
2 Sections – Arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data interpretation

The updated format removes the experimental section and reduces the overall test length while maintaining the same scoring scale.

GRE Scoring

The GRE uses a section based scoring system designed to evaluate a candidate’s verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing skills. The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections are each scored on a scale of 130 to 170, while the Analytical Writing section is scored separately on a scale of 0 to 6. Most universities focus primarily on the combined Verbal and Quantitative score, which results in a total score out of 340. Understanding the GRE scoring system helps students set realistic target scores based on the requirements of the graduate programs they plan to apply to.

Section
