NMAT by GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) is the primary entrance exam for NMIMS University — one of India's top private B-schools. Unlike CAT, NMAT has no negative marking, allows 3 attempts per cycle, and is conducted across a flexible 45-day window.
Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Grammar, Para-jumbles, Synonyms, Antonyms, and Fill in the Blanks. The tightest section — 28 minutes for 36 questions means under 47 seconds per question. Speed and reading fluency are the primary differentiators here.
Syllogisms, Blood Relations, Critical Reasoning, Puzzles, Courses of Action, and Arrangement sets. Slightly more time than Language Skills. NMAT LR is more straightforward than CAT DILR — sets are shorter and patterns more predictable, rewarding structured practice.
Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Number Systems, Data Interpretation, and Data Sufficiency. The most time-generous section. NMAT Quant is easier than CAT QA — concepts are tested at a moderate difficulty level, making accuracy the key differentiator more than speed.
Unlike CAT, NMAT allows you to choose the order in which you attempt the three sections. This is a significant strategic advantage — most toppers recommend starting with Quant (most time), then LR, and finishing with Language Skills. GRADSKOOL trains you to use this strategically.
NMAT Eligibility Criteria
NMAT has very open eligibility — any graduate from a recognised university can apply. Minimum 50% in graduation required for most participating colleges.
A Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Minimum 50% marks in graduation required — this is the most important eligibility criterion to check before applying to individual colleges.
Students in the final year of graduation can apply. Provisional admission is permitted — the degree must be completed before joining the programme. Final year students must ensure they meet the 50% minimum at graduation.
NMAT has no upper or lower age limit. GMAC does not have a reservation policy — all applicants pay the same registration fee. Individual colleges, however, have their own reservation and criteria policies.
NMAT allows up to 3 attempts in a single testing cycle — 1 initial attempt and 2 retakes. Each retake requires a minimum 15-day gap. No-shows count as attempts. NMIMS considers your best score across attempts.
NMAT registration fee is approximately ₹2,300 (late registration: ₹2,800). Retake fee: ₹1,200 + taxes. Rescheduling fee: ₹1,200. Register early for best slot availability at preferred centres.
Not mandatory for the exam itself. Fresh graduates can apply. However, most NMIMS and other top colleges prefer candidates with 2–3 years of work experience. Strong academics and high NMAT scores can compensate for limited experience.
NMAT Important Dates
Unlike CAT or XAT, NMAT has a flexible 45-day testing window — you choose your date. Registration opens in August and the window runs October to December.
NMAT dates are expected based on 2025 patterns. Official 2026 dates will be released on mba.com/nmat in August. Strategy: book your first attempt in early October to leave room for 2 retakes before the window closes.
Top Colleges Accepting NMAT
NMAT scores are accepted by 50+ B-schools across India and globally. The most targeted — with typical score cutoffs and placement data.
Scores below are typical shortlist scores — not official minimums. NMIMS shortlisting uses a composite score of NMAT + Competency Test + PI + work experience + academics. Meeting the NMAT cutoff is the first step — the Competency Test and PI are equally critical for final admission.
NMIMS score cutoffs are for General category, 2025 cycle. NMIMS 2026 overall cutoff reduced to 209 with sectional cutoff of 62 per section. Placement data from official NMIMS 2025 reports. All figures indicative — verify on official college websites before applying.

How GRADSKOOL NMAT Preparation Works
Two-way live class where you work through each section — Language Skills speed, LR pattern recognition, and Quant accuracy. Section-order strategy is practised from day one.
50 area-wise tests targeting specific topics after each module — vocabulary clusters, LR question types, Quant topic wise. Weaknesses are fixed before they affect mock scores.
12 sectional tests followed by 10 full-length NMAT-pattern mocks. Each mock simulates the actual adaptive format, individual section timers, and section-order choice.
Every mock followed by a detailed breakdown — time per question, section-wise accuracy, attempt vs accuracy mapping, and sectional cutoff tracking. Target: 62+ in each section.

What Students Say
The preparation phase was quite demanding — balancing studies alongside a full-time job was challenging. But the mentorship of Abhishek Sir made a significant difference. The GDPI guidance from the GRADSKOOL team, in particular, was instrumental in building my confidence and helped me develop a clear, structured approach to articulate my responses. Having someone in your corner who understands both the exam and what it takes to prepare under real-world constraints is something you can't put a price on.
Grateful to have converted NMIMS Mumbai Core! A big thank you to ALP Sir and the entire team at GRADSKOOL for their constant guidance, mentorship, and belief in me throughout this journey. The support never felt transactional — it felt like everyone genuinely wanted you to succeed. The preparation, the mock sessions, the strategic clarity — all of it came together at exactly the right time. Couldn't have done it without your support.
Grateful to share that I have converted NMIMS Mumbai Core MBA. This milestone would not have been possible without the constant guidance and support of ALP Sir and the entire GRADSKOOL team. The Competency Test mock was absolutely fantastic, and the marathon sessions were intense and incredibly fruitful — they played a key role in strengthening my preparation right when it mattered most. Truly thankful for the mentorship and support throughout this journey.
Frequently Asked Questions
NMAT by GMAC is the entrance exam for NMIMS University and several other top B-schools. It is fundamentally different from CAT and XAT — no negative marking, a retake policy (up to 3 attempts), and a section-wise timing structure. The retake policy changes preparation strategy completely: you optimise each attempt rather than treating it as a single high-stakes event.
NMAT allows up to 3 attempts within a testing window. Your best score is considered by all institutions. The strategy is to use your first attempt as a calibration test, identify weak areas, and improve in subsequent attempts. GRADSKOOL's NMAT programme is specifically designed around this multi-attempt strategy.
Yes — NMAT preparation begins mid-September alongside CAT in the GRADSKOOL programme. The content overlaps significantly. The key differences are NMAT's section-wise time limits, the no-negative-marking strategy, and the Competency Test for NMIMS Mumbai admission.
No — NMAT has no negative marking. This completely changes the attempt strategy: always attempt every question. Leaving questions blank is never the right call. GRADSKOOL's NMAT strategy sessions focus entirely on maximising attempts within each section's time limit.
GRADSKOOL includes 10 full-length NMAT mocks and 12 sectional tests. The programme also includes 5 NMIMS Competency Test mocks — the additional test required for NMIMS Mumbai Core MBA shortlisting.
NMIMS Mumbai Core MBA is considered one of the most rigorous interview processes among private B-schools. The PI tests academic depth, current affairs and analytical thinking. WAT essays at NMIMS are time-pressured and content-heavy. GRADSKOOL's PI WAT GD programme prepares you specifically for the NMIMS selection format.
