Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur — one of India's most prestigious B-schools. Unlike CAT, XAT has a unique Decision Making section and is accepted by 150+ B-schools including XIMB, GIM, TAPMI, XIME and IMT.
The most distinctive and feared section of XAT. Tests your ability to evaluate business situations, identify the best course of action, weigh ethical trade-offs, and reason through complex scenarios. Cannot be cracked with CAT preparation alone — requires dedicated frameworks.
Reading Comprehension passages with inference-heavy questions, critical reasoning, para-jumbles and vocabulary in context. XAT VALR is harder than CAT VARC — passages are denser and question options are more deceptive. Logical Reasoning is interspersed throughout.
Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Number Systems, and Data Interpretation sets. XAT QA is slightly harder than CAT QA — DI sets are more calculation intensive. No TITA questions. The negative marking on wrong answers and unattempted questions demands careful attempt strategy.
Static GK, current affairs, business awareness, and international events. GK is tested separately in Part 2 and does not contribute to the XAT percentile — but is considered by XLRI and other colleges during shortlisting and final admission. Selective colleges set minimum GK cutoffs.
XAT Eligibility Criteria
XAT has one of the most open eligibility policies among MBA entrance exams in India.
A Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university. There is no minimum percentage requirement for appearing in XAT — though individual colleges set their own academic criteria for admission.
Students in the final year of their graduation can apply. Provisional admission is allowed — but the degree must be completed before joining the MBA programme. No backlogs or incomplete examinations at the time of admission.
XAT has no upper or lower age limit. Working professionals with multiple years of experience and fresh graduates both appear for XAT. XLRI values work experience in the final admission process but does not make it mandatory for applying.
There is no limit on the number of times you can appear for XAT. The exam is conducted once every year in January. XAT score is typically valid only for the current cycle — unlike GMAT/GRE which are valid for 5 years.
XAT registration fee is approximately ₹2,000 for the base exam. Each college applied to via the XAT portal charges an additional programme fee of ₹200–300 per college. All applications are made through the official XAT portal at xatonline.in.
Not mandatory for the XAT exam itself. However, XLRI BM and HRM programmes strongly prefer candidates with work experience — typically 1–3 years. Candidates without work experience should focus on a strong academic profile and high XAT scores to compensate.
XAT Important Dates
XAT is conducted once a year in January. Unlike GMAT/GRE, you cannot choose your date — registration and exam dates are fixed by XLRI.

How GRADSKOOL XAT Preparation Works
Two-way live class where you work through reasoning aloud — especially in Decision Making. Frameworks are built through structured questioning, not passive explanation.
40 area-wise tests targeting specific topics after each module — Decision Making situations, Verbal patterns, and Quant topic clusters. Errors are identified before they compound.
12 sectional tests followed by 6 full-length XAT-pattern mocks at regular intervals. Each mock simulates actual XAT timing, negative marking, and section-switching pressure.
Every mock followed by a detailed breakdown — DM accuracy, VALR time distribution, QADI attempt vs accuracy, GK gaps. Personalised action plan after each test.
Top Colleges Accepting XAT
XAT is accepted by 150+ institutes. XLRI Jamshedpur and XLRI Delhi are the flagship destinations — but a strong XAT score opens doors across India's best B-schools.

What Students Say
The sessions at GRADSKOOL really helped me build my concepts and accuracy. What stood out was not just the content but the way each concept was built systematically — so that by the time you sit in the exam, it feels like second nature. ALP sir's approach to teaching is genuinely different: he doesn't just explain, he makes you think. The structured method and the consistent feedback loop made a real difference to my preparation. Grateful to have been part of this cohort.
GRADSKOOL has built something truly impactful. The clarity of vision, the structured approach to learning, and the focus on real student outcomes make it stand out from everything else available. A special acknowledgment to Abhishek Leela Pandey — his dedication, strategic thinking, and deep understanding of student needs are clearly reflected in everything GRADSKOOL offers. His ability to design systems that not only teach concepts but also improve performance is commendable. It's inspiring to see a platform so committed to quality education and student success. I'm confident GRADSKOOL will continue to grow and help countless aspirants achieve their goals.
From my CAT journey to XAT, sir stood with us at every step. The GDPI preparation was fantabulous — mock interviews, stress rounds, the study material, all perfectly structured and aligned. The budget PDF helped a lot in my actual interviews. The mock interviews from normal to stress rounds prepared me for exactly what happened in real interviews. Words can't define how much you helped, sir.
Frequently Asked Questions
XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) is conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur every year in January. XAT 2027 is scheduled for 5 January 2027. It is one of India's most prestigious MBA entrance exams — accepted by XLRI Jamshedpur, XLRI Delhi, XIMB, GIM, TAPMI and 150+ institutes. XAT is the only MBA exam with a dedicated Decision Making section.
Decision Making in XAT is fundamentally different from CAT LR. It tests ethical judgement, business sense and situational reasoning — not pure logic or puzzles. Questions present dilemmas where there is no single correct answer; you are evaluated on your reasoning process. It cannot be cracked by shortcuts — GRADSKOOL's DM module is purpose-built for this section.
Yes — XAT preparation begins mid-September in the GRADSKOOL programme, running parallel with CAT. The VARC and QA content is largely shared. Decision Making and GK are XAT-specific additions. Most GRADSKOOL CAT students also appear for XAT with targeted additional preparation.
Yes — XAT has a General Knowledge section with 25 questions in 10 minutes. GK scores are NOT used in percentile calculation but are considered separately during XLRI shortlisting. A very low GK score can hurt your XLRI call even with a strong overall percentile. GRADSKOOL covers GK as part of XAT preparation.
GRADSKOOL's XAT programme includes 6 full-length XAT mocks and 12 sectional tests. Each mock replicates the exact XAT pattern — 75 questions across Decision Making, Verbal & Logical Ability, Quantitative Ability and GK, in 190 minutes.
Yes — XLRI GDPI preparation is included in the XAT Live + Mocks + Interviews plan. XLRI conducts GD-PI-WAT for shortlisted candidates. The PI at XLRI is known for being intense and profile-specific. GRADSKOOL's PI WAT GD programme covers this in full detail.
